The role of the Moderator
Moderation maintains the quality and credibility of all unit standards and qualifications within the NQF system. The moderator’s role is to ensure that the assessment process is fair, valid, reliable and practicable. A moderator is therefore responsible for moderating and supporting assessors, assessment instruments as well as setting up and managing an assessment and moderation system (through company policies and procedures).
LSS is able to assist organisations in drawing up their policies and procedures for assessment, assessment appeals, moderation and recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Who should be trained as a Moderator?
People who are responsible for maintaining the quality of the assessment system within their organisation, department or area of work. This may be a Line Manager, Training Co-ordinator or HRD Manager.
Assessment
During the workshop participants will be given the opportunity to moderate one assessment off-site with instruments that are provided by the Facilitator. Learners are required to moderate one more assessment on-site. The instruments are also provided to the learners. This moderation includes the moderating of the site specifics like the recording and documenting of assessments and the assessment policies and procedures of the provider. Learners are briefed on how to prepare and submit a moderation portfolio of evidence for assessment against the Moderator unit standard. The portfolio is submitted to LSS for assessment and as soon as the Learner-Moderator is found competent, learners will receive a letter and assessment report indicating their competence declaration. Assessment College will issue a certificate of competence and apply for endorsement from the ETDP SETA. The certificate is nationally accepted by all ETQA’s should you wish to register as a moderator.
